Venn Cubed

From Bottlenecks to Breakthroughs: Diageo SA Elevates Financial Planning

How Venn Cubed helped Brandhouse (now Diageo SA) simplify complexity, accelerate reporting, and unify planning with IBM Planning Analytics.

Brandhouse Beverages, once a joint venture between Diageo, HEINEKEN International and Namibian Breweries, operated a diverse beverage portfolio across Southern Africa. Brandhouse (now Diageo SA) required a robust, scalable planning and reporting platform across its complex shareholding structure and diverse range of products. Venn Cubed implemented IBM Planning Analytics to bring structure, speed and accuracy to the company’s reporting and forecasting processes.

"We finally had a platform where everyone could trust the numbers. The uncertainty was gone, and we could plan better, faster, and more confidently. IBM Planning Analytics became critical to our business."

Operating across countries, currencies and shareholders, Brandhouse faced significant planning complexity. Finance teams manually prepared three sets of financial reports for each shareholder. Planning processes were fragmented across spreadsheets and disparate systems, making it difficult to consolidate inputs from Finance, Sales, Marketing and Supply Chain. The business had strict reporting deadlines – most critically, to deliver statutory and management packs by working day three to Diageo Global. Manual work made this timeline extremely difficult to meet.

A Phased Implementation with Lasting Impact

Venn Cubed led a multi-phase implementation of IBM Planning Analytics. Phase one focused on automating management reporting across income statement, balance sheet and cash flow. Once established, the system was expanded to support the Annual Operating Plan and rolling monthly forecasts. A key innovation was data loading at one minute past midnight on working day one, allowing exception reports to be reviewed the same morning. The system integrated data from various ERPs and databases, applying business logic to allocate costs and improve accuracy.

Faster Reporting, Better Forecasting, Smarter Decisions

With a unified planning platform in place, Diageo South Africa achieved remarkable improvements in speed, accuracy and insight. Monthly forecasting replaced ad hoc planning, real-time exception reporting became routine, and commercial teams could finally access profitability insights by customer and SKU. Most importantly, the business met its strict reporting deadlines with confidence – turning a once-frustrating process into a strategic advantage.
