🚵‍♂️ Cape Epic Update: “Tough, hot and unforgiving”
A quick update from Werner Joyce out on the trails at the Absa Cape Epic — and it’s been a proper test of endurance so far.
After a fast 20 km Prologue at Meerendal, the race moved into the real challenge:
➡️ Stage 1 (Montagu – 90 km | 2,150 m climbing)
A brutal start. Werner described it as very warm, hostile terrain with sharp rocks throughout. Hydration was a major challenge, with many riders struggling in the heat.

➡️ Stage 2 (Montagu – 102 km | 1,250 m climbing)
Another tough and unforgiving day, although cloud cover offered some relief from the heat.
Stage 3 (Montagu to Greyton – 141 km)
The longest stage so far. A true transition day with serious distance. Conditions shifted, bringing rain and mud into the mix — but Werner and his teammate Alewyn Grové pushed through well.
Today – Stage 4 (Greyton – 87 km | 1,750 m climbing)
A shorter stage on paper, but still demanding. At the latest checkpoint (50 km in), Werner and Alewyn were sitting around 234th overall and 70th in their category, continuing to push through tough terrain.

Looking ahead, all eyes are on Friday’s Queen Stage:
Stage 5 (Greyton to Stellenbosch – 134 km)
The big one. Long, demanding and set to be a defining stage of the race.
With changing weather conditions and already tough terrain under the legs, this will be a true test of endurance, resilience and mental strength.
